Ghana's Moments in Time

From independence to now — the milestones, missteps, and miracles that shaped us.

1957

Independence Declared

"The independence of Ghana is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa." — Kwame Nkrumah

A bold opening statement. No notes.

1963

The OAU is Founded in Addis Ababa

Nkrumah's Pan-African dream takes institutional form. 32 nations sign the charter. The continent, briefly, feels unified.

A united Africa — the idea was extraordinary. The sequel has been complicated.

1965

Akosombo Dam Opens

The Volta River Project delivers hydroelectric power. Entire towns are displaced. Ghana lights up — at considerable human cost.

Progress has always been a transaction. We are still negotiating the terms.

1966

The Coup. First of Many.

Nkrumah was in Hanoi when the military took over. He never returned home.

He received the news abroad.

1979

Rawlings' First Coup

Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings seizes power briefly, executes three former heads of state, then holds elections and hands power back. A most unusual coup.

He returned power. Briefly. He'd be back.

1981

Rawlings Returns — For Good This Time

A second coup. The Provisional National Defence Council takes power. Ghana would be Rawlings' project for the next 19 years.

The encore was longer than the original performance.

1983

The Economic Recovery Programme

Ghana turns to the IMF. Structural Adjustment arrives. Everyone adjusts, mostly downward.

The first of many partnerships with the Fund.

1992

Return to Multi-Party Democracy

Ghana holds landmark elections. A new constitution. A new hope. And new promises.

The birth of our beloved four-year amnesia cycle.

2001

Ghana Joins the HIPC Initiative

Heavily Indebted Poor Countries. We acquired the certificate. Debt relief arrives, slowly, with conditions attached like trailing paperwork.

We were highly qualified for that particular designation.

2006

Ghana Hosts AFCON. The World Watches.

The Africa Cup of Nations comes home. Stadiums gleam. The Black Stars exit in the quarter-finals, with maximum dignity and minimum goals.

We built the stage. The performance was aspirational.

2007

Oil is Discovered

"Ghana will be the next Dubai," said several uncles at Christmas.

Dubai was unavailable for comment.

2019

The Year of Return

Diasporans arrive in droves. Accra glows. Beyoncé visits. A nation loses its collective cool.

We were most calm about Beyoncé. This is a lie.

2022

Economic Crisis & IMF Programme

Debt restructuring, cedi at historic lows. A very dignified queue at the IMF's door.

Neo-colonialism with a polite repayment schedule.

2026

You Are Here

69 years on. The star still burns on the flag. The potholes still test our faith.

We persist, Osagyefo. We always do.
